Lineshape Analysis of the 0-0 Exciton Absorption Band in Pyrene Crystals

The Iineshape and the line-width of the O-0 exciton absorption band associatedwith the transition 'B3u='A1g are investigated over the temperature range from300 K to 126 K. The line-width changes linearly with temperature in the 6-polarized0-0 band (Z>-band), indicating that the exciton state in pyrene is described bya weak scattering scheme. The high-energy side of the #-band is found to havea Lorentzian lineshape which is also an indication of weak scattering. Contrary tothe 6-band, the high-energy side of the n-polarized 0-0 band (a-band), which islocated above the Z>-band, has a Gaussian lineshape suggesting that excitons inthis band are scattered to the lower Z>-band. The lineshape on the low-energyside of the a- and Z>-bands exhibit a tendency to be a Gaussian at low temperatures.The exciton-phonon coupling constant and the exciton band half-width arediscussed.
