Resonance Luminescence Lines of Free Excitons in Alkali Iodide Single Crystals

Narrow luminescence lines and their excitation spectra in Rbl, Nal, K[ andCsl crystals are studied uncoe?- the excitation in the first exciton absorption bandat a temperature range 5 -TOO K. The tmost remarlcable results of the luminescenceare as follows: (l) This luminescence line is located quite closely to the peakposition of the first exciton absorption band. (2) The half-',vidth is smaller than5 men. (3) The quantum. efficiencies are estimatccd to be 0.0I, 0.001, 0.0002 and0.0006 for Rbl, Nal, Kl and Csl, respectively, under an assumption that, thequantum efficiency of the total luminescence including the broad intrinsic lumi-nescence with large Stokes slaift, is to be unity. (4) Temporal ures above which theintensities of these lines decrease are 20, 25, 30 and 20 K Yc>r Rbl, Nal, Kl andCs[, respectively. On the basis of these results, a tradiative aannihilation process ofa free exciton is discussed.
