Interference of Exciton Polaritons in PbI_2 Thin Platelets

Reflection, transmission and luminescence spectra of 4H-Pbl. thin crystals havebeen investigated experimentally in the direction of c-axis at 2 K. Interference struc-ture of reflection and transmission spectra has been compared with that calculatedwith use of a simple dispersion relation of polaritons. An effective mass of an excitonmotion is derived to be (l.0f-0.2)m. from analyses of the spectra in the excitonresonance region. Luminescence with a thickness dependent oscillating structure hasbeen observed in the range of free' exciton luminescence as well as of bound excitonluminescence. This is assigned to the photon emission of discrete polariton modesestablished inside a stab due to the interference effect. The intensity distribution ofthe spectra and its thickness dependence are discussed in relation with the polaritondecay processes.
