Structural Aspects of Fe-Mg Artificial Superstruture Films Studied by X-Ray Diffraction

In the [Fe(l5A)?Mg(30A)].. film with its superstructure period ,4=45A, thesignificant peak-broadening and intensity-reduction are observed in Bragg reflectionsfrom the bulk structures within the (110)Fe/(00.1)Mg-textured layers. Such a diffrac-tion profile has been well explained by an extended step model, which takes into ac-count a random distribution of the superstructure period, varying according to a gaus-sian distribution with the width AA/A=5.4%. This value corresponds to about onemonolayer thickness. A loss of the texture has been also observed in the Fe layer ofother two ASF's with their Fe-layer thickness less than 15 A, which seems to be acritical value for the formation of the textured F<: layer.
