Magnetism of Fe Interface in Contact with Pd by Mossbauer Spectroscopy

Maunetic rrorerties of Be surface overcoated with Pd were investigatea tcymeans of "Fe M6ssbauer sr>ectroscor>'. Bv UHV der>osition, multilaver filmswere rrerared, whose structures for instance were "Fe(70A)-"Fe(3.5A)-Pd,or "Fe(70 A)-"Fe(3.5 A)-"Fe(3.5 A}Pd. The hvrerfine field at 4.2 K of thefirst surface layer was smaller than the bulk value. The spin direction was con-firmed to be ferromagnetjc. At 300 K, the first surface layer behaved paramag-netically and the exchange field was considered to be remarkably weak. On theother hand, the hyperfine fields of the next few layers were slightly larger thanthe normal value, A Friedel type oscillation of the surface magnetization wasthus suggested.
