The surface magnetism of thick Fe films coated by Mg0, MgF. and Sb wasinvestigated by means of M5ssbauer spectroscopy. The samples were preparedby the alternate depositions of a coating material, Fe" (about 100 A), Fe" (4 A)and a coating material in an UHV system. Measurements were carried out at 300and 4.2 K with and without 45 k0e. The results showed all the samples werecompletely ferromagnetic and the magnetizations were oriented parallel to thefilm plane. The spectra were analyzed by computor fitting with assuming two sixlines, the bulk part and the surface part. Although the surface effect on theisomer shift is similar in the three cases (i.e. larger than the bulk value), theeffect on the hyperfine field remarkably depends on the coating materials ; increaseof hyperfine field in Mg0- and MgF.-coated surfaces and decrease in Sb-coatedcase.
