Electron-Nuclear Double-Resonance Spectra of Polarons in Poly (Paraphenylene Vinylene)

Electron-ntrclear dotrble-resonance (ENDOR) spectra of trndoped poly(paraphenylene vinylene)are well described by the spin density distribtxtion of the polaron f'or finite electron-electroninteractions. Theoretically calculated spin distribution trsing the Pariser-Parr-Pople model withintermediate strength of the interactions yields the naaxiraatrtn spin density of 0.09 at vinylene siteswith the half-width of' the distribtrtion over fotrr PPV 110110111(21 units. The non-monotonic formof distribution together with the signs of spin densities are confirmed with the EINDOR-inducedESR as well as electron-nuclear-ntrclear triple resonance (TRIPLE). The observed extension ofthe polaron is larger than that of the soliton reported in polyacetylene, which may be related tothe nature of the polaron in conjtrgated polyrmers being viewed as a botrnd soliton pair.
