Structure,Defect and Reconstruction Process of Discommensuration Lattice of Quartz

A model of reconstruction process of discommensuration lattice (DL) after a sud-den change of temperature within IC-phase of quartz is proposed. The triangular pat-fern observed by electron microscopy in the IC-phase of quartz is interpreted in termsof discommensurations associated with B, phonon mode propagating along the threeequivalent directions within hexagonal basal plane. In analogy to dislocations in thecrystal growth, a particular type of defect in hexagonal DL are thought to play an important role in the reconstruction process. The process is composed of (i) nucleationof DL defect, (ii) jump diffusion of defects in the asymmetric directions, (iii) relaxa-lion of discommensuration lines, (iv) pair annihilation of DL defects. Recent in-situobservation of heating process of quartz seems to confirm partly the proposed model.
