A Model of an Incommensurate-Commensurate Phase Transition

A phase transition in an incommensurate structure induced by a sof't modewith the wave vector k near tlve Brillouin zone boundary k. is investigated. 'thesoft mode belongs to the lower branch of two split phonon branches degenerateat k.. It is shown that this gc+neral feature of the phonon ';pectrun? leads withdecreasing temperature to the shift of k toward k. and firtally to the lock-intransition into a commensurate phase. The present model is appropriate forammonium fluoroberyllate, for example, and differs qualitatively from thoserecently suggested for potassium selenate and metal chalcoge??ides.
