Diffuse Scattering in the High-Temperature(1×1)State of Si(111)

Diffuse spots slightly displaced from the (,' 3 x J -3 ) positions were observed in thehigh-temperature (1 X l) state of Si (1 1 1) by low-energy electron diffraction. The spotsshowed threefold 3m symmetry and rotated around the 8 pccsitions with changes inprimary energy. These are reproduced by kinematic calculations for a surface con-figuration with adatoms distributed randomly over both the threefold-hollow andthreefold atop sites of a (1 X 1) substrate with the exclusion of forming bonds with acommon substrate atoms.
