Measurement of precise finger manipulations on a high-speed cutting simulator

We developed a high-speed cutting simulator that recreates the minute movements of the air-turbine handpiece during operation, although there is no actual cutting. In order to move the air-turbine handpiece, the operator has to apply forces of less than 80 gf and perceive the micro movement of the air-turbine handpiece. Using the simulator, we investigated how factors such as the dental mirror and surgical gloves affected precise finger manipulations. Eight dentists were requested to perform stable movement of the air-turbine handpiece on the simulator and to control the operating force using less than 80 gf with direct vision, indirect vision, and direct vision with surgical gloves. The operating forces and movement of the air-turbine handpiece were evaluated. We found that dentists who used indirect vision in daily practice moved the air-turbine handpiece accurately with indirect vision. Dentists who usually used direct vision moved the air-turbine handpiece accurately with direct vision. We concluded that training in the use of indirect vision is valuable in achieving ideal operating posture and precise finger performance.
