The Backward Peak in Pion-Nucleon Scattering and Composite Structure of the Pion

In order to investigate the dynamical structure of the pion, assumed to be a composite system of N-N^^-, the backward peak in π^±-p scattering at about 4 GeV/c is treated by rearrangement scattering formalism. The shape and the height of the backward peak depends on the constructive force binding N-N^^-, which in turn works as an interactive force in the rearrangement scattering. From the experimental data, the result is obtained that this force has a range of about the nucleon Compton wave length and a strength of about 10 GeV. The energy dependence of the angular distribution, the possibility of attributing the second peak of the angular distribution to the rearrangement mechanism, the small backward peak in π^--p scattering as a result of the rearrangement scattering, etc. are discussed.
