Enterococci have been isolated from clinical specimens of sputum and urine, and are regarded as a major cause of opportunistic infections. In addition, resistance of Enterococci spp. to antimicrobial agents has been reported. Therefore, we measured minimal inhibitory concentrations of several different antibiotics against Enterococcus faecalis (50 strains), Enterococcus faecium (50 strains) and Enterococcus avium (43 strains) isolated at the microbiology laboratory between January and June of 1995. The MIC_<90> of imipenem, ampicillin and vancomycin on E. faecalis were 2μg/ml, 4μg/ml and 4μg/ml, respectively. The MIC_<90> of cefozopulan, chloramphenicol or ofloxacin were 64μg/ml each. The MIC_<90> of VCM on E. faecium was 1μg/ml. However, those of imipenem and sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim were 128μg/ml or higher, suggesting high resistance against these antibiotics. E. avium showed intermediate susceptibility ranked between those of E. faecalis and E. faecium. Clinical isolates of Enterococci spp. demonstraied resistance against multiple antimicrobial agents. However, all isolates in the microbiology laboratory were sensitive to VCM. There were VCM-resistant strains detected in Europe or in the United States. Continuous surveillance for VCM-resistant Enterococci is necessary.
