A number of reports have been published on the relationship of platelet size and platelet function, and it has been demonstrated that both intracellular metabolism and function are more active in large platelets than in the small. The mean platelet volume was ascertained in a total of 154 cases composed of normal subjects (22), renal failure cases (26), liver cirrhosis (15), chronic heratitis (9), Iron deficiency anemia (42), acute leukemia (17), chronic myelocytic leukemia (6), and thrombocytopenia (17). A Coulter ZBI connected to a Chanalyzer was used, and the platelet volume distribution when plotted on normal probability paper showed a log-normal distribution. The results of our study showed the platelet volume to be decreased in renal failure, iron deficiency anemia and untreated acute leukemia, particularly a 22% decrease was noted in the renal failure cases when compared with the mean volume of 7.50 μ^3 for normal subjects. Patients with liver cirrhosis, chronic hepatitis and thrombocytopenia showed either a value within the normal range or only slightly increased.
