During the period between April 1980 and March 1988 we encountered 293 patients with liver cancer of whom 28 (9.6%) underwent surgical excision. Twenty-one (18 of whom had a complication of liver cirrhosis) of the 28 patients, whom we were able to follow up, were investigated for the relationship between preoperative findings and prognosis. In all 21 of these patients, the tumors were located within two hepatic segments. Patients with tumors of 6cm or more in diameter and those with portal tumor emboli and daughter nodules showed poor prognosis. Nevertheless, only 3 of the 21 died within 6 months of the operation, indicating favorable surgical results. No correlation was noted between the preoperative liver function test values and the prognosis.
