We examined the susceptibility of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), isolated at our hospital in 1991,to oxacillin (MPIPC), vancomycin (VCM), minocycline (MINO), flomoxef (FMOX), imipenem (IPM), tosufloxacin (TFLX), rifampicin (RFP), and arbekacin (ABK) by the microdilution technique. Isolates were considered to be methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) at a MIC (minimum inhibitory concentration) of MPI PC of 4 μg/ml or more. MRSA was classified according to the degree of resistance into Group II, IIIa, and IIIb. Methicillin-sensitive S. aureus (MSSA) was classified in Group I. Each group consisted of 50 strains. Coagulase types and toxin production were compared among the 4 groups. In Group I, the coagulase type varied widely from I to VIII, but coagulase type II (11/50 stains) and VII (15/50 strains) were detected relatively frequently. In GroupII, coagulase types II (22/50 strains) and III (20/50 strains) were detected. Groups IIIa and IIIb were primarily coagulase type II (49/50 and 46/50 strains, respectively). Enterotoxin was produced by 44% of the strains GroupI, 48% in GroupII, 88% in GroupIIIa, and 8% in GroupIIIb ; the production rate was lowest in the markedly resistant GroupIIIb and highest in GroupIIIa. Toxic shock syndrome toxin-1 (TSST-1) was produced by 16% in Group I, 36% in GorupII, 86% in GroupIIIa, and 4% in GroupIIIb ; the production rate was also lowest in GroupIIIb. These results suggest that enterotoxin production is rather decreased in MRSA that have acquired high resistance.
