Review of 128 polypectomy specimens of the stomach revealed 9 fundic gland polyps in 8 patients. All the polyps were located in the upper part of the stomach and were single in 6. Histologically they consisted of proliferated fundic glands with many cystic dilatations ; they differed from hamartomatous polyps of Peutz-Jeghers syndrome and were identical with gastric polyps from a patient with familial polyposis coli. The patients were all female, the majority being middle-aged and asymptomatic. Gastric polyposis containing hyperplastic oxyntic glands has been usually recognized in association with familial polyposis coli. Our results indicate that fundic gland polyps can exist in the absence of familial polyposis coli and are likely to be more common than previously presumed.
