One hundred and forty-five patients with carcinoma of the esophagus were treated in our clinic. Of the 145 patients, resection of esophageal carcinoma was performed in 97 (66.9%). Forty of the 97 patients (41.2%) were diagnosed histologically as stage IV. Thirteen of these 40 patients (32.5%) were diagnosed as a_3,19 (47.5%) as n_3 or n_4,6 (15.0%) as a_3 plus n_3 or n_4,1 (2.5%) as pl_1 and another case (2.5%) as m_1. The over-all survival rate of the stage VI patients was 35 per cent at one year after operation, 14 per cent at two years and 7 per cent at three years. Comparing the survival rate between a_3 and A_3 (non-resected cases), it was significantly better in a_3 than in A_3 patients. On the other hand, there were no significant differences in survival rates between patients with a_3 and with n_3 or n_4,or between patients with and without radiotherapy.
