In order to chronologically and morphologically examine the dynamics and the resolution of interstitial fluid after cerebral infarction, experimental cerebral ischemia was produced in rat brain by microsphere-embolization. The horseradish peroxidase (HRP) was injected into the cerebral cortex as the tracer of the interstitial fluid dynamics. In the control group, there was a regular pattern of tracer distribution as follows : The injected tracer spread to the subarachnoidal space of the brain surface through the subcortical white matter to the ventricle. In the ischemic group, "dense tracer distribution around the infarction focus" was observed in addition to the regular pattern of the tracer distribution mentioned above. Further the ultrastructures of the core and the periphery of the infarction focus were observed electron microscopically. The tracer was not seen in the ischemic core. In this area, the glial processes were significantly dilatated. There were no viable neurons. On the other hand, the tracer was revealed diffusely in the vascular basement membrane and the abluminal vesicles in the endothelium of the blood vessels around the focus. In these areas, the structure was considerably well-preserved except for only slight swelling of the astrocytic processes. Thus, the results suggested that, in the blood vessels around the ischemic focus, there was an active vesicular transport of the edema fluid from the brain into the blood stream.
