Experimental cerebral edema was produced in rats by cold injury method in the fronto-parietal cortex, and the dynamics of cerebral interstitial fluid and the resolution of brain edema fluid around the lesion were then examined in the rat brain. Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) was injected into the fronto-parietal cortex near the cold lesion by microelectrophoresis as the tracer for interstitial fluid dynamics. In the control group, there was a regular pattern of tracer distribution. The tracer spread in a round shape at first. The area where the tracer could be seen macroscopically became smaller as time passed. Forty eight hours after the injection, the tracer was macroscopically seen only near the injection site, but could be still seen in the neuronal cytoplasms, nerve fibers and vascular walls. In the injury group, the "dense tracer distribution around the focus" was observed in addition to the regular pattern of tracer distribution as the control group. This phenomenon was most remarkable 3 days after the injury procedure. In the models of this stage, the areas around the cold lesion were observed electron microscopically. Reaction product was seen in many endothelial vesicles. Some of those vesicles seemed to be opening at the abluminal endothelial surface of the blood vessels. The perivascular structure was considerably well preserved in this region. In the comparative experiment, the animals with intravenous HRP administration 3 days after the cold injury procedure was revealed extravasation of the tracer into the injury core. Therefore, it is considered that the edema fluid extravasated in the injury core and was absorbed transvascularly around the focus at this period.
