We have successfully performed endoscopic retrieval of accidentally ingested foreign objects into the upper gastrointestinal tract (GI tract) in 55 cases at Kinki University Hospital and in 6 cases, of purposely swallowed foreign bodies at Osaka medical prison from October 1975 to December 1995. No severe complications occurred such as perforation, mediastinitis and peritonitis after foreign body ingestion or during the endoscopic procedure. Mucosal changes of the esophagus, stomach and duodenum were checked before and after endoscopic removal of foreign bodies which included three types of disc batteries. It is concluded that most of the ingested foreign bodies lodged in the upper GI tract can be removed by endoscopic procedure.
