<Originals>Immunohistochemical studies on estrogen receptors in gastric cancer by immunoperoxidase technique

Histochemical studies on estrogen receptor (ER) in primary gastric cancer were performed in 140 cases by using the peroxidase anti-peroxidase method (PAP method). The ER positive rate in all the gastric cancers was 16.4%, and tended to be higher in postmenopausal females. By macroscopic type, the highest rate of ER was 28.2% in Borrmann's type 3,while no correlation was found between scirrhous gastric cancer and ER. By histological type, the differentiated type was about twice as frequent as the undifferentiated type. Furthermore ER is rarely localized in the nucleus which would show organ specificity. In two cases of malignant acanthosis nigricans, ER positive gastric cancer cells and melanin metabolism were related endocrinologically.
