A controlled hypotensive anesthesia at performing radical mastectomy for breast cancer was evaluated from the standpoints of the amount of blood loss and necessity of blood transfusion, operation time and postoperative complications. Out of 118 radical mastectomy cases, 68 received controlled hypotensive anesthesia using trimethaphan and 50 received normotensive anesthesia. The hypotensive anesthesia group exhibited an obvious reduction in blood loss and in blood transfusion in comparison with the control group. In terms of operation time, no significant difference was noted statistically between both groups. No postoperative renal dysfunction and postoperative bleeding were seen in any of the two groups. These results lead to a conclusion that hypotensive anesthesia with trimethaphan is safe, effective and satisfactory for radical mastectomy.
