<Originals>Effects of Surgical Reduction Therapy on the Estrogen Dependency of DMBA-Induced Rat Mammary Tumors

• Although estrogen receptor (ER) positive tumors account for approximately 60% of the 7,12-dimethylbenz (α) anthracene induced rat mammary carcinoma^1,progress of the tumor reduced the effects of ovariectomy even in the presence of the ER. In the present study ovariectomy was found to be ineffective in all the rats with tumors of 9.1 cm^2 or larger. However, after these larger tumors regressed in their size to 9.0 cm^2 or less by surgical reduction therapy, the effect of ovariectomy appeared again. Tumor regression effects were seen in 83.3% (5/6) of the ER-positive large tumors. These results indicate that the reduced effectiveness of ovariectomy with tumor growth may be attributed to the enlargement of tumor rather than to quantitative changes in the tumor cells or the ER.
