Low-Loss and Polarization-Insensitive Semiconductor Hollow Waveguide with GaAs/AlAs Multi-Layer Mirrors

We present the design and the fabrication of low-propagation-loss and polarization-insensitive hollow waveguides with GaAs/AlAs semiconductor multilayer mirrors for widely tunable waveguide devices. We achieved a low propagation loss of less than 0.2 dB/cm for the transverse electric (TE) mode using 32-GaAs/AlAs-pair multilayers. The addition of a phase-control layer to the top surface of the mirrors results in a low polarization-dependent propagation loss of less than 0.2 dB/cm.
