31P-MRS and histological changes of rat liver after intrahepatic arterial injection of lipiodol.

Phosphorus-31 magnetic resonance spectroscopy (<SUP>31</SUP>P-MRS) was used to assess the metabolic damage of rat liver after intrahepatic arterial injection of lipiodol (LPD). On 5th day, the ratios of β-ATP to phosphomonoester (PME) and to inorganic phosphate (Pi) of rat liver reached the minimum levels. Ten days after the injection of 0.1ml LPD, the ratio of β-ATP to PME or Pi returned to the control levels. The results suggest that metabolic damage caused by the injection of 0.1ml LPD is temporary.<BR>On histopathological study, the necrosis rate of the liver increased significantly within 2 days after the injection and the histopathologic change didn't correlate well with the metabolic one. These findings indicate that ATP was used to restoration of necrosis and regenerated hepatocytes did not have enough capacity of produce ATP.
