Substituted benzoylthiocholines were synthesized and their application as reagents for clinical measurement of pseudo-cholinesterase was investigated. Among 21 compounds, 2, 3-dimethoxybenzoylthiocholine (19b) was found to be an excellent substrate for the measurement of the enzyme. The procedure was simple and self-hydrolysis of the substrate at the optimum pH of the enzyme was minimal.
