To prove our hypothesis that there is a higher level center of the immune system in the brain itself than in the thymus and that the brain, including the hypothalamus and cerebrum, may play a role in controlling immune regulation in mammals, immune responses following brain transection and/or cerebroectomy in rats were investigated. We observed: 1) markedly decreased thymus and spleen weights and significant involution in thymus and spleen tissues microscopically but no change in the adrenals; 2) slightly inhibited formation of anti-SRBC antibody and delayed immunological transmission; 3) no significant change in mitogen induced transformation in axillary lymph nodes and spleen cells; and 4) no change in hormone levels, thyroxine, growth hormone and cortisone 3, 5 and 7 days after cerebroectomy inhibited the immunological competent tissue due to bankruptcy of direct or indirect immunological transmission from the brain.
