B Cell Specific Alloantibody in Chronic Thyroiditis, Myasthenia Gravis and Gastric Cancer

A series of 259 sera from 50 chronic thyroiditis cases, 51 myasthenia gravis cases, 15 gastric cancer cases, three post kidney transplants, 126 postpartum blood specimens, nine normal healthy males and five healthy unmarried females were studied against peripheral B and T lymphocytes from 33 normal donors. The sera from the chronic thyroiditis cases showed a positive reaction of 14.0%, followed by 13.7% in myasthenia gravis, 20% in gastric cancer and 33.3% in post-transplant reacted B cells but not with T cells. The various B cell specificities were identified by reaction patterns which were unrelated to HLA specificities. As a preliminary observation, it is intriguing to find that B cell specific alloantibodies were found in patients with chronic thyroiditis, myasthenia gravis and gastric cancer without any prior blood transfusion. There was no incidence of association between prior pregnancy and B cell antibody production.
