Theory of Melting at High Pressures. II : Pair Potentials and Melting Curves

The relations between pair potentials and melting curves at high pressures are investigated and the occurrence of a maximum in melting curves owing to the softness of the repulsive potential near the first node is more clearly elucidated. As in a previous paper, the melting process is interpreted as an order-disorder transition, but an improved model is used, in which the lattice spacing is determined by minimizing the free energy. The effective potentials assumed involve an exponential factor as an essential part of repulsion. An attractive part is also considered to approximate reality. The melting curves are calculated for rubidium and cesium and are in fairly good agreement with the observed curves. The volume compressions are comparable to the experimental values and thus the defect in the previous theory is corrected.
