Effect of Heat Treatment on the Ionic Conduction and the Optical Absorption in Sulfur-Doped Sodium Chloride

Changes of the electrical conductivity and optical absorption of sulfur-doped NaCl crystals have been measured for various thermal treatments. Although as-grown crystals mostly contain sulfur ions in the form of Na_2S precipitates, these sulfur ions are dissolved into the lattice at high temperatures. In a quenched specimen there appear two characteristic absorption bands at 4.15 eV and above 6 eV which are attributed to the isolated S^<--> ions in the lattice. By annealing the quenched specimen at moderate temperatures the ionic conductivity and optical absorption change through several stages and finally reach those in an as-grown crystal. These phenomena are interpreted by assuming some association processes of isolated sulfur ions, unintentional divalent cations and vacancies, and further aggregation processes of their complexes.
