Effect of Divalent Cation Impurities on the Formation and Bleaching of Colloids in NaCl

A study of the effect of Cd, Pb and Mn on the formation of colloids in NaCl by electron irradiation has been made by the measurement of optical extinction spectra. The concentration and particle size of colloids have been estimated by comparing the extinction curves with the results calculated by Savostianowa. The observed spectra show that the concentration of colloids increases and the particle size decreases as the concentration of divalent cation impurity increases. A simple theory of the effect of divalent cation impurities on the formation of colloids is described in relation to the nucleus and the process of coagulation. The thermal bleaching of colloidal coloration has also been investigated in both the pure and the impurity-doped regions. The bleaching of colloidal coloration is more remarkable in the region of higher concentration of divalent cation impurity.
