Energy Distribution of Transmitted Secondary Electrons from Porous KCl Films

The energy distribution of transmitted secondary electrons from porous KCl films was measured by an ac-retarding field method. The surface potential of the films was obtained from the peak position of this energy distribution. There were three distinct regions in the behavior of the secondary emission according to the surface potential and its distribution. In Region 1 the distribution range of the surface potential was quite small, and the yield increased exponentially with the surface potential. In Region 2 the distribution range of the surface potential increased rapidly with the collector voltage and the energy distribution of emitted electrons broadened. In Region 3 the energy distribution curve had approximately a Gaussian shape and seemed to be determined almost entirely by the distribution of the surface potential. A mechanism of the energy distribution was proposed using a channel electron multiplier model.
