The energy distribution of transmission secondary electrons emitted from a porous KCl film much thinner than a practical one was measured by means of the ac-retarding potential method. The energy distribution curve exhibited a subpeak near the potential of the Al substrate. For higher external fields the characteristic sharp peak corresponding to the tunnel emission from the Al film was found. The electron injection current from the Al film as a function of the field was calculated by a model based on the well-known field emission theory. The result showed that the injection of electrons was caused mainly by the tunnel emission of metal electrons in the case of practical dynodes. It is concluded that the work function of a metal film plays an important role in the characteristics of the transmission secondary emission from porous KCl films.
