Absorption, Luminescence, and Coloration in Sulfur-Doped KCl and KBr Crystals

Luminescence emission and coloration due to the photochemical reaction were induced by irradiation into the characteristic absorption bands of KCI-S and KBr-S crystals. As-grown crystals show ultraviolet(uy) luminescence at liquid nitrogen temperature (LNT) on irradiation into the characteristic absorption bands due to precipitates. In quenched crystals, excitation into short-wavelength absorption bands around 4.7-4.8 eV produces uv and blue emissions at LNT,and coloration due to the formation of F centers and blue emission at room temperature (RT). Excitation into long-wavelength absorption bands around 3.55 - 3.60 eV produces red emission both at LNT and RT. The results are discuss-ed with reference to previous results on sulfur-doped sodium halide crystals.
