Acidic Arabinoxylan as an Extracellular Polysaccharide of Suspension-Cultured Soybean Cells

An extracellular acidic arabinoxylan was obtained from the medium of suspension-cultured soybean cells. The polysaccharide had a linear β-1,4-linked D-xylopyranosyl backbone with both neutral and acidic side chains. The acidic side chains were glucuronosyl and 4-O-methyl glucuronosyl residues, and the neutral side chains were arabinosyl and xylosyl residues. Although the amount of acidic arabinoxylan increased with the age of cultures, the percentage of acidic arabinoxylan in the whole extracellular polysaccharides was almost constant during the growth period (2 to 8 days).
