Photolysis (high pressure mercury lamps, 100W and 400W) of 1-substituted 6,7-dimethoxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline N-tosylates (Ia-d) in a basic medium [80% (v/v) EtOH-Na_2CO_3] in the presence of NaBH_4 was carried out to give the corresponding amines (IIIa-d) in good yields.
