Induction of Geotrichum candidum Lipase by Long-Chain Fatty Acids

Geotrichum (G.) candidum produces two extracellular lipases, I and II. Long-chain fatty acids and their esters induced lipase production, while middle- and short-chain fatty acids and their esters did not. Lipase production increased with the chain length of the fatty acid, and long-chain unsaturated fatty acid esters were the most effective. Northern hybridization showed that the genes of lipases I and II were transcribed in the medium containing oleic acid, and that there was more lipase II mRNA than lipase I mRNA. Since fatty acid is a metabolite of its esters, it is suggested that long-chain fatty acids participate in the expression of G. candidum lipase genes.
