On-line Optimal Control of Fed-batch Culture of Glutamic Acid Production

An on-line optimal control system was proposed to control the fed-batch culture of Brevibacterium divaricatum NRRL 2311 producing glutamic acid with ethanol feeding. An algorithm based on dynamic programming and regression analysis for the presented control system consisted of two parts : the first part, carried out prior to cultivation, employs a large-scale computer to solve the recursion equations of dynamic programming, in order to estimate the value of the constrained maximum function at all admissible state points in the cultivation time; the second is for on-line control during the cultivation by a small-scale computer. This control system was experimentally ascertained to improve the operation of the fed-batch culture.
