A mutant, Bacillus cereus BQ10-S1,obtained from B. cereus BQ10 by uv irradiation, was found to produce about twenty-five times as much β-amylase as the parent strain and required neither starch nor its related compounds for β-amylase production. The presence of starch, maltose, and glucose rather repressed the enzyme production. The addition of meat extract to the culture broth of the mutant resulted in further enhancement of β-amylase production and in morphological changes from a short rod to a filamentous form. The investigation of factors affecting the form of the mutant showed that meat extract could be substituted for by the potassium ion which caused both enhancement of the emzyme production and morphological changes.
