An Extended INDO-Cl Study on Protonated Retinal Schiff-Base

The bond lengths, bond orders, electron densities and optical absorption of theground state of retinal forming a protonated Schiff-base linkage with a lysine residue(PRSB-Lys) are calculated using the extended INDO-Cl molecular orbital method,and the result is compared with the previotus one obtained by the m-electron approx-imation. It is, thus, shown that the r-electron system of PRSB-Lys is appreciablypolarized, and that the o -n interaction in PRSB-Lys is too large to be neglectedwhen a C-C bond in its polyene chain is twisted. It is also shown that the negativecounter point-charge exerts influence on the ;m-electron distribution in a similar wayto that shown by the m-electron approximation.
