To examine the effect of methyl groups on the optical absorption of retinal inethanol solution, the m-electronic states of desmethyl retinals are calculated byextending our previous LCAO-ASMO-SCF-Cl method to include 2p.- andpseudo z-orbitals in methyl branches of polyerue chain. The effect of ethanolsolvent is also taken into account in the two ways: (l) the effect is assumed to beimplicitly included into the parameters of calculation ; (2) the interaction ofretinal with its neighboring ethanol molecule is explicitly calculated regardingethanol as a point-dipole. It is thus shown that the observed 2-..'s of desmethylretinals with all-trans, 9-cis or ] 1-cis form can reasonably bcc explained by takingaccount of the change in structure due to the substitution of methyl group(s)by hydrogen atomys'.
