On the basis of the ZDO approximation of LCAO-ASMO-SCF-Cl theory ofm-electrons, the optical absorption of phycocyanobilin is calculated, by takingits interaction with a point-charge and a point-dipole into accour?t. It is thusshown that the reversible change in absorbance of a[lophycocyanin from Anabaenacylindrica, which was observed by Murakami et al., can be reproduced accordingto the following model : when allophycocyanin changes its tertiary structure dueto the change in its physico-chemical environment, the terminal pyrrole ring Dof one of the two phycocyanobilins in allophycocyanin rotates around the singleand double bonds of its adjacent methyne bridge.
