The results of detailed mechanical analyses of marine sands from the intertidal flat zone and beachsands from the beach flat over a normal high tide mark at Ariakehama on the west coast of Kagawa Prefecture in Setouchi district are presented. The sands are mainly derived from granitic rocks. Weight percentage cumulatives plotted on arithmetic-probability paper of sands from the above two zones clearly indicate the presence of four modes connected by points of inflexion, which occur in the vicinity of -0.5, 1.25 and 2.25 phi, and it has been found that the point of inflection separating the two principal modes persistently occur at about 1.25 phi and the points of inflexion separating the two extra modes at about -0.5 and 2.25 phi, and the former of which is a point separating coarse tail from the two main modes, while the latter is point separating fine tail from the main mode. The sands from the two zones have the same two main modes, but shallow marine sands from the intertidal flat zone are characterized by having a fine tail mode (positive skewness) while the beach sands are characterized by having a coarse tail mode (negative skewness).
