Theory of the Optical Absorption of Retinylidene Iminium Salt in Solution

We assume such a model for retinylidene iminium salt in solution that retiny-lidene iminium cation interacts not only with its counter anion X- but also withthe local field E due to solvent molecules. On the basis of the model, the x-electronic states of the cation are calculated by our previous LCA0-ASMO-SCF-Cl method, assuming that X- is a negative point-charge in the plane ofthe m-systena and E is a reaction field acting on the salt dipole naoment in a spheri-cat cavity.It is thus' shown that the observed wavelength 2.... of absorption ??naxintumof the salt in solution can be explained with a reasonable choice of both thedistance 7? of X- from Nf. and the radius a of the cavity. It is also SIIOWII thatthe 2-.. decreases with decreasing 7? while it steeply increases to reach a saturatedvalue as the dielectric constant e of solvent increases.
