A Self-Trapped Hole in Alkali Silver Halide Crystals

7-ray irradiation at 77 K induces defects in Rb.AgI, and K.AgI, crystals. Theanalysis of hyperfine structure and super-hyperfine structure of F,SR spectra showsthat a hole is self-trapped mainly at an iodine Ton and is weakly coupled to the nearestalkali ion of Rb" or K". The center has a symmetry axis along the direction from theiodine ion to the alkali ion. Iodine ions at two sites, out of three different sites in theunit cell, form the hole center. The optical absorption spectra measured with thelinearly polarized light along the a-, b- and c-axis of the crystal of Rb.AgI, have mainpeaks at about 2.9, 2.5 and 3.2 eV, respectively. The respective peaks in K.AgI,crystal are at about 2.9, 2.5 and 3.1 eV.
