Optical Constants and Excitons of Alkali Silver Halide Crystals

The anisotropic reflection spectra of K.CuCl. and K.CuBr. have been measured inthe range from 4 to 26 eV using synchrotron radiation. The optical constants havebeen obtained through the Kramers-Kronig analysis and compared with thecalculated interband transition probability. The first fundannental absorption bandsat about 4.5 eV are interpreted as being due to the excitons of the Frenkel type tightlybound on a cuprous Ton. The absorption bands in the range f'rom 6 to 12 eV are prob-ably caused by the virtual excitons with holes irn the 7t-bands of halogen ions. Theanisotropic absorption bands due to the core excitons of potassium Tons have beenfound around 20 eV. There is no clear structure due to plasrnons of the valence elec-trons in the energy loss spectra.
