Direct Observation of the Change in the Phonon Spectrum of KI Due to the B1-B2 Phase Transition

The change in the phonon spectrum of Kl due to the pressure-induced phase transi-lion from the Bl phase (rock salt) to the B2 phase (cesium chloride) was observed atroom temperature by the absorption measurement using a diamond anvil cell. Thesynchrotron radiation was used as the light source in the far infrared region. From theenergy shift of the transverse optic (TO) phonon with pressure, the mode Gruneisenparameters were found to be 1.70 in the Bl phase and 2.70 in the B2 phase. The TOphonon energy of Kl in the B2 phase was found to be 106 cm '
