Fine Structures of Cd^<2+> 4d Core Excitons in CdCl_2-CdBr_2 Mixed Crystals and CdI_2 Crystal

Reflection spectra of CdCl,-CdBr. mixed crystals and pure Cdl. crystal weremeasured in detail in order to investigate Cd" 4d core exciton states. The secondenergy-derivative reflectance spectra calculated from measured spectra reveal that thecore exciton absorption consists of eight fine structures in CdC1. and nine fine struclures in CdBr. and Cdl.. The fine structures in mixed crystals shift continuously withthe change in composition, and the correspondence between the fine structures inCdCl. and CdBr. has been clarified. Peak positions and relative intensities of the finestructures were obtained by a line shape analysis. Based on a one-electron excitationpicture, the observed fine structures are explained in terms of spin-orbit splitting ofthe 4d core level and crystal field splittings of the 4d and 5p levels of the Cd" ion.[cadmium halides, mixed crystal, core exciton, Cd4Vlevel, exchange interaction, ll crystal field splitting,spin-orbit interaction,reflection spectra,derivative spectra l
