Optical Excitation of the Rotational Transition of Methane in Condensed Xenon

The far-infrared optical absorption spectrum of methane diluted in condensedxenon has been measured at 6 K. For CH.-Xe and for CD.-Xe systems, distinctpeaks have been observed at 47.6 cm ' and 21.8 cm ', respectively. The peakshave been attributed to the excitation of the rotatio?aal transiticcns between specificlevels of the methane molecule. The peak energies are in fairly good agreementwith theoretically calculated values of the hindered rotator by Nishiyama andYamamoto.
